“I have a student who moved here a year ago from another school. He was not motivated, missed a lot of days, and was failing most of his classes. We met multiple times to get him to see that he needs to be here every day, in class, doing his work.

After meeting with his mom, we found out he loves sports and even played baseball when at his previous school. This was a game changer. I met with our assistant principal, and we agreed to have our athletic director talk with him about baseball. We did this and he said yes, he would love to go out for baseball. This then led to the discussion about his grades. We worked all last year, and he was able to play some baseball games.

This school year began better with his attendance, but his grades were still slipping. My student wanted to go out for basketball, but his grades held him back from playing in all the games. We met multiple times, talked with teachers, and worked on missing work and writing papers. We looked up his grades when we got back for spring semester and were so impressed to see he is passing six classes and is spring sport eligible! He will be back on the basketball court playing games next week.”
