School Partnerships: Nettle Creek Hagerstown JR SR High

Betsy helped to establish a homework assistance program called the “After School Academy.” Students attend to have a safe and quiet place to complete homework, study for tests, and build skills.  “Jack”, a student who displayed poor behavior and had a reputation for being “hard to reach,” attended the first session of the year. He seemed to want to make trouble for all the students by being disruptive and Betsy was torn: she wanted Jack to attend but not if his behavior compromised the rest of the students. After learning of Jack’s less than ideal home life, Betsy knew he needed this after school time. She spoke with him and explained what was expected in the After School Academy program. He apologized for his behavior, began attending the After School Academy regularly, and seems to feel as if he is a part of the program. He is working more diligently to complete his homework.  Although his life outside of school is still difficult, for two hours a week he can focus on his academics.  Betsy continues to let him know that she cares about him, his success in school, and his future educational goals.
