In 2007, Wayne County saw 110 students drop out of school. Only 57% of those who had entered as freshmen four years earlier graduated.
Having Communities in Schools personnel imbedded in the schools in Wayne County is making a great difference in what the Chamber of Commerce can support. Since CIS is keenly aware of the needs of the schools and the organizational structure, “Chamber Business Education Leadership Links” can be more effective in making the connections with our members to help fill the needs.
~ Suzanne Derengowski, VP Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce
According to the MUNCIE STAR PRESS, high dropout rate impacts the community dramatically:80% of prisoners in America are high school dropouts.45% of the homeless population (under age 25) are dropouts50% of head of household on welfare are dropouts$1.4 billion would be saved from reduced crime related costs by a 1% increase in male U.S. high school graduation ratesHigh school graduates earn an average of $7,216 per year more than those who drop out of high school
Richmond should be and will be a place where children's dreams come true and because of the great programs that CIS has implemented this will happen sooner rather than later. CIS is a crucial part of this community. This organization is the go between with the students and families making sure needs are met so that students can prosper in school and life in general.
~ Richmond Mayor Sally Hutton
