Communities In Schools is the nation’s leading community-based organization helping kids stay in

school and prepare for life. For more than 30 years, CIS has championed the connection of needed

community resources with schools.

Some Facts about the CIS Network

Nearly 1.2 million students and their families were directly connected to resources through CIS during the 2006-2007 school year.Almost 200 local CIS affiliates operate in 27 states and the District of Columbia.More than 3,250 school and education sites were served by CIS.Nearly 53,000 volunteers donated more than 3 million hours to CIS last year, at a dollar value of nearly $60 million.

As a result:

90 percent of local CIS affiliates provide mentoring and tutoring services.73 percent provide after-school/before-school programs.The average cost per student is $180.

Among CIS-tracked students:

78 percent improved attendance.89 percent had fewer incidents of discipline.80 percent improved academic performance.82 percent were promoted to the next grade.78 percent of eligible seniors graduated.3 percent dropped out, lower than the national average of 4 percent and

  lower than the estimated 6 percent dropout rate for student populations

  similar to those served by CIS.
