I am amazed at how many people are still “…recently finding myself unemployed…”. People who have never been in situations where they have needed to ask for help are finding their way to our doorsteps. “Tools for Schools” has been a godsend for several of our families who are finding themselves in such places. I think most folks have in their mind what “poverty” looks like – I can tell you, it looks like me and you.
One such individual, a gentleman, came to our back to school night. He had heard of CIS and the “Tools for School” program through a friend of his. Once a business owner, the economy relegated him to a place of bankruptcy and finding no immediate work to fall back on. He has been working odd jobs, but still has found nothing that would meet the financial needs of feeding a family of five. I could tell it was difficult for him to ask if we could be able to help his daughter acquire school supplies and a backpack so that she might be able to go to her classroom with the items she needed for school, like her friends did. It was obvious that he was one who accustomed to being able to provide for his family – I admired his courage, to be able to humble himself for the benefit of his children. I was glad to be able to pass along the supplies she needed to begin school, ready, for the first day. He was pleased that she would be able to hold her head high. Thanks Tools for Schools!
