Soon after beginning her fourth year as CIS coordinator at Charles Elementary, Melody Weikart hears a knock on her door. It’s “Branden,” a student she’s come to know well. “I need one of those papers,” Branden says with a smile, and then adds, in response to her puzzled look, “You know, one of those papers that my mom has to sign so that we can have lunch together.” For returning coordinators like Melody, relationships have had time to deepen and students are eager to get back to routines that have been helpful to them. Melody returns Branden’s smile and hands him his parental consent form. He will be her first lunch of the knew school year.
