About Us
Communities In Schools of Wayne County, (CISWC) was created to coordinate collaborative planning and delivery of services in partnership with schools and existing community resources in 2001 as a result of the Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE) research project, funded by the Lilly Endowment and commissioned by the Wayne County (Community) Foundation that affirmed the following points:

1) Challenges facing schools cannot be solved by educators alone;
2) Family influence has a major impact on factors affecting learning;
3) Wayne County is resource rich with many human and social services, youth organizations, businesses, faith and civic organizations available; and
4) Individuals from various parts of the community are willing to help find a solution.
How CIS Works
Communities In Schools helps students stay in school and make right choices by connecting schools with needed community resources. By bringing resources, services, parents, and volunteers into schools, we create a community of caring adults who work hand in hand with educators.
Communities In Schools helps communities assess the needs of their youth. We then design plans for meeting those needs, using existing resources. We connect young people with services in a variety of ways: In some schools, services are made available to all students and their families.
In other schools, CIS connects services with particular students in need, either on a one-time basis or as part of a carefully monitored case management system. CIS also brings community resources to students and families through after-school programs. We accomplish these tasks by bringing the "Five Basics" into the school.
